Q: What are the similarities between Borobudur and Pulp Fiction. Explain your answer. A: In my opinion, the similarities between Borobudur and Pulp Fiction are the way the think to design them. Each represent a high innovative and creative skills. Pulp Fiction is designed by a creative director which he likes to make film in a different way. It is told in non chronological order and the story is reflecting things that happened around us. Drugs, and so on. Same as Borobudur, the carved design on the five low terraces is reflecting the things that happen around us and gives some moral and lesson to us. I believe the King in sailendra dynasty which he was the man who come with the idea of Borobudur have some similarities in thinking with the director of Pupl Fiction, Quetin Tarantino. They are creative in thinking and have all the words of wisdom inside them. The pulp fiction movie has been defined by some viewer as a soft, moist , shapeless mass of matter. A book containing lurid subject matter and characteristically printed on rough and unfinished paper. This concept is one way of examples of innovative and creative style in making film. As for Borobudur, the structure and architecture designs are different from other kind of building. They both are created by running away from the normal views.
Q: Elaborate the culture that influence the song Getting Jiggy Wit It. A: Rap of course BUT they tend to change the rhythm to more like combination of reggae and rap itself. The lyric is also weird. This can be proven by the word the used in the song, or lyrics. The word 'wit', 'illway the an-may on the ance-day oor-flay' are influence by the neger culture. If you look carefully the way the singer dance in the clip for this song, will smith dance very different from normal rap dancer. Maybe he tend to apply the word Jiggy (Jiggy=Jiggle. Meaning: to cause to move with quick little jerks or oscillating motions). It a rap dance but for me it's weird. It's a culture of his own. I think it is his new identity.
Q: List all the design charcteristics of Never Ever music video. Back up your answer with facts. A: From my observation, the design characteristic is quite abstract. The background scenes in every shot in the video clip is not related to the lyrics and the music itself. They also tend to design the video clip in a slow motion mode. When the shot change to focus on the each singer, the clip will start by showing a flower. In my opinion, this reflect the female singers. The designer like to play with lights and glowing particles. It is great composition of ideas and effects. It is designed in a sentimental way which that reflect the song. For this reason, we can see, the movement of fire, water splashing, explosion are shoted in slow mode. It did reflect sentimental value. It didn't want to make it as SG type of video clips. Then for me, it is a way or idea to change our perception from explosion (SG type) to U type as they make the explosion in slow motion. Plus combining with other slot of water splashing makes the clips designed marveously.
Q: Why and for what purpose was Borobudur constructed. Provide factual explanation. A: Borobudur was constucted for reminding or to illustrate the progress of the Boddisatva (the Buddha before his enlightenment)- a prototype of ideal royalty - in his striving for all embracing compassion. Each terrace show a phase of his development. In lower scenes are more mundane and contain moral lesson. The higher are more severe and static in style. In architecture of Mahayana doctrine, the central stupa symbolizes the axis of the world source both the universe created through mind and of enlightenment through total self-abnegation and compassion. From here we can see the prove why they made the Borobudur. To symbolize something or to reflect to something. It was their imagination to see the greatest Buddha religion to be remembered for the next generation.
Q: What are the contemporary culture/s that influence Raygun. Explain your answer. A: In my opinion, pop is the answer. Even they (the designer) are not using glowing images, but the characteristics of typefaces remind me of the Andy Warhol era. The designers always use small fonts, messed typefaces and always cut half the fonts. They believe that it is one way to design something that please to our eyes as the viewer. From my observation, they like using lines in the designing the magazine. Every page has line going up and down, vertical to horizontal. In photographic of artist and video, they like to use close up shots, which can be proven by observing the images taken. They will cut the picture using lines and mixed it up with another angle. The also like to collapse borders.
Q: Identify and elaborate the target audience between Pulp Fiction, Ray Gun and Never Ever. Provide your own personal observation and input to your answer. A: In my observation, Pulp Fiction, Ray Gun and Never Ever have their own target audience. I believe Pulp Fiction was created for people like to run away from normal movies available in cinemas. To run away from stereotype kind of movie. That is the reason why the director created the movie in non-chronological order. As for Ray Gun, not all viewers like to see or view the magazine. Because it been design creatively (eg. messed typeface, upside down pages) did make some people feel headache. Response to this fact, I think this magazine is created to people who like design..especially graphic designer and people who want to be inspired by somethng in their daily work or life. For Never Ever, in my opinion the video clip is targeted to fans who like abstart style, cool shots, nice angles, pretty artist, great voice and lastly to people who love them! As a conclusion, these three element have different style but one thing they have in common is the four words Interactive, Innovative and Concept Exploration!!
